Stop Selling Your Opportunity to Candidates During Interviews

I’ve done it myself many time. I think I like a candidate and start to worry if they like me. Next thing you know, I’m selling the candidate on how great our company is and why they should love to work here. A structured interview will keep you on track so you’re evaluating candidates based on their responses to the same questions and situations. If you feel like you need to spend valuable interview time on selling your opportunity, perhaps you should reevaluate the opportunity. Try to wait until the end of the interview to answer any questions the candidate might have and answer them directly without wandering into the “our business is great” speech. Take emotion out of the process, compare the facts of each candidate and make a decision. Hire like an engineer!
